What is Barcamp? 

Barcamp is a global community built of everyday people who come together to share their knowledge and passion. It’s for people who want to share, listen and learn from their peers in an energetic, fast-paced colearning environment.

Barcamp Southwest Florida brings together technology professionals, business leaders, innovators,  entrepreneurs, creatives, educators, and students for the advancement of a 21st century work force through the open exchange of knowledge, skills and experiences.

Origin, Philosophy and Culture of Barcamp

Origin: The name BarCamp is a playful allusion to the event's origins, with reference to the programmer slang term, foobar: BarCamp arose as an open-to-the-public alternative to Foo Camp, which is an annual invitation-only participant-driven conference hosted by Tim O'Reilly.

The first BarCamp was held in Palo Alto, California, from August 19–21, 2005, in the offices of Socialtext. It was organized in less than one week,^[1] from concept to event, with 200 attendees.

Since then, BarCamps have been held in over 350 cities around the world, in North America, South America, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Australia and Asia.^[2] Attendees have often travelled internationally to attend BarCamps.^[3] -Wikipedia 

Philosophy: BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense gathering with discussions, demos, and interaction from attendees. 

About Us:  We are an open group of independent professionals who organize to grow a technology community in Southwest Florida to create opportunities for ourselves, our companies and our region.

We support our community by hosting monthly social tech.up's for SWFL locals and hope to begin offering technology related classes in 2013.  

We are the organizers of BarcampSWFL - an annual technology conference for professional development, skill-based education and networking among vibrant Florida-based professionals and students.

We share our collective resources freely and strive to support all regional efforts that advance education, business, entrepreneurship, economic development, and innovation.
